Geek Chic Knits

About the Artist

I have been a huge geek as long as I can remember. I grew up on the border of the Great Dismal Swamp in Chesapeake, Virginia. As a child I was entranced by Star Wars (the original trilogy, which as far as I am concerned is the ONLY trilogy) and read every book I could get my hands on. Also, my family had a strong tradition of crafting. So when I could be dragged away from the adventures of Luke Skywalker I was introduced to a wide variety of arts and crafts; sewing, knitting, wood carving, and calligraphy to name a few.

I went to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia (otherwise known as Academic Boot Camp) where I majored in Neuroscience in the hopes that I could spend more time around brains and rats. After that, I went to grad school at George Mason University where I got my Masters degree in Biopsychology and spent even more time around brains and rats. Somewhere along the way, I got married, became addicted to yarn, converted to Quakerism and began wearing traditional Plain dress (a rare practice among modern Quakers but still found in some congregations).

Over the years, I have discovered that I am not happy unless I have some sort of crafting project in the works. Now that I have graduated from grad school I have created Geek Chic Knits as a way to combine my love of science and my  need for creative expression.  I plan to provide quality knitted and crocheted goods for my fellow geeks and geek lovers, and maybe even some non-knitted items as well.

Currently I’m making my home in a mini-menagerie in Northern Virginia. My husband and I share our home with a rat (Artemis), a cocker spaniel (Theo) and one very lucky formerly stray kitten (Gilly).
